FAQs
Can my kid aged under 7 climb?
We currently don’t have a dedicated climbing area just for kids. For this reason, we will only permit children aged 7 and over to climb and they must be supervised by a responsible adult at a ratio of no more than 2 children per 1 adult
Are there kids climbing classes?
Families are a huge part of the Hangar community, we will always have our keen coaches on hand to give advice and help, as well as free inductions for EVERYONE who comes to TCH, we have extra staff on hand on weekends mornings.
After launch we will introduce Rock Club, coach led climbing sessions for under 14's.
How often do you set new routes?
Every single week, at every single grade, so there will always be something new to test yourself against.
And we don't save all the good stuff for the higher grades.
It's about having loads of stuff to project, and just as much stuff to flow through, enjoy and repeat again and again.
Do you sell climbing shoes?
Hell yeah.
The Hangar shop is stacked with climbing shoes from the biggest brands in the industry including adidas Five Ten, La Sportiva, Scarpa and Evolv.
What climbing grades do you use?
We have our very own colour-coded grading system designed to reinvigorate your climbing experience and reduce the focus on labels and numbers.
We don't believe climbing should boil down to a single number or letter. The idea is for you to explore all of the colour grades and find your sweet spot.
Finding each grade is easy: the holds are set in the relevant colour.
What to expect
Do I need an induction?
Every first time visitor to TCH will receive a quick induction, even if they've climbed before. It's the chance to show you around and make sure you have everything you need for a great session. This will be lightning quick if you're a regular climber and a little more in depth if you're brand new to the game.
Do I need to book in advance
You don't need to book to come for a climb at TCH but to reduce any waiting time for an induction it definitely helps to book in advance. We haven't yet opened to the general public so bookings are not currently available.
How fit and strong do I need to be?
You don’t need to be fit or super strong to start climbing. You’ll find climbs (we call them problems) you can do on your first visit, and the more you practice the stronger you’ll become! Just make sure you warm up before you start to minimise the risk of injury, and you can get cracking right away (our staff can help if you need guidance – just ask).
What equipment do I need?
You don’t need to bring anything with you except your enthusiasm and some comfortable clothes. Shoe hire is included in entry and chalk’s just £1.50.
What should I wear?
General sports gear is fine. The important thing is to be comfortable, and wear something that allows for a lot of movement. It can also be chilly at The Hangar, although you’ll warm up fast once you’re climbing, so layers are good. You can always remove your sweater once you get sweaty!
I don't like heights - how high is the wall?
Bouldering isn’t about climbing high. The wall is only 4.2m at its highest point. And remember, while your hands might be at the top, your feet are unlikely to ever be more than 3m off the ground. The Climbing Hangar has crash mats throughout and we can teach you to land safely to minimise the risk of injury. As you gain in confidence you will stop noticing the heights.
Is there free parking available?
Yes, The Climbing Hangar Southampton offers ample parking, right out front of the building and also along the side of the unit.
